Wynton Rufer the player of the century currently working with OFC as a football ambassador helping them in development program around Pacific regions. He is here in the country as the PNG National Coach to mentor our players to prepare them for the future and the coming OFC U-19 championship.
The training squad which has been named is made of up of the boys which took part in the OFC U-17 Championships in Vanuatu last year and few from the PNGFA development programs.
The OFC U-19 Championship is scheduled for May 2014 in a yet to be determined venue.
The tournament serves as the qualifier for the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2015 which is being held in New Zealand and with the Kiwis automatically qualifying as hosts one of the remaining Member Associations is set to make their U-20 World Cup debut come 2015.
He has been with the U-19 boys the past week working with them in their skill level and game plan doing two sessions a day at the PNGFA Academy in Lae.
Winton said PNG have talented players and the key now for him is to mold the team and players into a team.
With PNG hosting the South Pacific game in 2015 the main goal for Wynton now is to help prepare our mens senior team into a winning team.
“Individually our players have high skill level compared to majority of the players in New Zealand but don’t have the opportunity to get more exposure,” said Rufer.
The training camp ends on Thursday 13th February and Wynton returns backs to New Zealand today.
