The Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) now hope to uncover many more like him and are holding a basic refereeing course for aspiring local whistle-blowers next week.
The six-day course starts on Monday and will be conducted by the federation’s own referee instructors.
“We have our very qualified referee instructors to run the course,” SIFF referee development officer Justin Mutukera says. “I will be conducting a supervisory role only.”
The course is open to both men and women and is aimed at people who have not had any prior formal referee training.
The age-group being targeted is 25 to 30 years and those taking part must be healthy, fit and have a good educational background.
The content will cover an introduction to the FIFA Laws of the Game and how they are applied in matches.
Those who pass will be awarded with a basic refereeing certificate from SIFF which will qualify them to officiate at junior level.
“I want only people who are serious about refereeing to attend,” Mutukera says. “This course is not for people who want to decorate their walls with certificates, it is for people who are passionate about football and refereeing.”
Anyone interested in taking part can collect registration forms from the SIFF office at Ranadi, registrations close on Friday, August 20.
Participants are urged to register early as only 25 places are available and no late registrations will be accepted.
