Ten primary schools from the Faleata District, Aleisa, Aele-Fou, Saina/Toamua, Vaigaga, Vaiusu, Vailoa, Vaitele-uta, Lepea, Vaimea & Vaimoso Primary Schools, all had students participating.
The festival, the third to be held in the country since Just Play was introduced, is the culmination of the six-week programme conducted by trained teachers and volunteers in the various schools.
Each school has two teachers, one male and one female, who have been taught how to deliver the Just Play programme in their respective schools and who go on to receive continuing support from the FFS Just Play team.
The programme uses football games and activities to encourage children aged between six and 12 years old to be active and live healthy lifestyles.
Just Play project manager Lynette Laumea-Faai’uaso says with more than 560 children taking part the Faleata Festival was a very successful opener to the Just Play programme for 2013.
“Seeing the children enjoying the games, enjoying the company of kids from other schools and also showing off their skills and putting what they have learnt into practice was encouraging,” Laumea-Faai’uaso says.
“It was great to see the support from the Faleata District review officer and teachers at the schools all wanting to be part of the activities and also the parents for their support on that day and now we would love to have all kids from all schools and levels be able to participate in Just Play Festivals in the near future.”
FFS CEO Sarai Bareman says it is an honour to have hosted the festival at the FFS fields.
“It is a culmination of six weeks of football in the Faleata District schools and an awesome opportunity for the children to come together and compete in a fun and safe environment.”
