The aim of the day is to increase the profile of women’s football in Honiara, the nation’s capital, through participation.
Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) women’s development officer Diane Justus says plenty is in store for those taking part and that everyone is welcome to be involved.
“We are planning competitions for the veterans, the disabled and young children, and there will be prizes for the winners,” she says. “The idea is to give women who have not participated in football a chance to experience the game first hand.”
The celebration of female football is also catching on in the provinces with officials from Auki and Buala both stating their intention to organise their own events.
This interest is yet to be put into action but preparations in Honiara are going ahead as planned.
The SIFF is inviting teams to register for the competitions at its office headquarters while the public in general are also welcome to turn up at the SIFF Academy to take part.
The Women’s Football Day will be held at the academy grounds this Saturday from 7am and the fun is set to continue throughout the day.
The first day dedicated to women’s football in the Solomons was held on the same date last year.
The concept was born at the 2009 FIFA Women’s Football Symposium in Honiara, during which participants agreed to set aside a day for the promotion of the women’s game in the country.
The day is supported by Our Telekom, the major partner and sponsor of football in the Solomon Islands.
