Cook Islands Football Association technical officer Tahiri Elikana says CIFA staff are pleased with the success of the competition and the improvement they have seen over the past five weeks.
“The level of improvement has exceeded our expectations this year and we are already looking forward to next year’s competition,” Elikana says.
Parents and supporters ducked out of work early on Wednesday to take in the finals and were not disappointed by the action-packed football on display at CIFA’s Matavera Complex.
In the girl’s division, Apii Nikao dominated all facets of play as they overwhelmed Titikaveka 2-0 to secure the 2015 championship crown. Avarua School scored early in the first half of their match but were denied a wider margin by Arorangi. The match finished 1-0 in Avarua’s favour, securing them second place, while Arorangi claimed a well deserved third place finish.
Meanwhile in the boy’s division Avarua showed skill and football flair to score early in their match against Arorangi. With their opponents unable to shut down their exciting attacking play a determined Avarua continued to press forward and eventually triumphed 3-0.
An exciting encounter between Nikao and Titikaveka had both sides rearing to secure the victory for themselves. With vocal supporters cheering on either side, it was Titikaveka who edged ahead of Nikao to claim the victory with a 1-0 win to claim second place.
Competition sponsor Origin Gas, represented by managing director Claude Simpson, expressed delight with the performances of each of the teams.
“Origin Gas is happy to be on board with Cook Islands Football Association to support the schools and we’re looking forward to continuing to support the tournament,” Simpson shared.
