Tahiti women’s team confirmed their passage to the semi-finals of the XIII South Pacific Games Women’s Football Tournament after an exciting 2-0 win over New Caledonia. New
Caledonia contributed much to this tournament despite their three defeats and no goals and will have learned much from their first experience at this level of the game.
For Tahiti, the dream continues with Maima Marmouyet driving her team on with some important contributions toward her team’s creative cutting edge. Stephanie Iakewe had New Caledonia’s
best chance but her dipping volley just cleared the crossbar missing by centimetres.
Gloria Hauata put Tahiti ahead after 60 minutes with a long range effort that flew in past Honorine Pouidja’s left hand upright. The goal was a cruel blow for New Caledonia for whom luck
has been in short supply at this tournament.
At 1-0 down, New Caledonia launched one final push in search of a goal and it was at this juncture that Hauata exploited the extra space and lobbed Pouidja to make it 2-0 to Tahiti
sealing qualification for the semi-finals and sending New Caledonia home without a point or a goal to show for their efforts.
