Six clubs are competing in the territory’s top division this season with newly promoted Ilaoa & To’omata joining Utulei Youth, Lion Heart, PanSa, Vaiala Tongan and FC SKBC.
The competition format is a two-Round Robin, with the team sitting in top spot at the end of the two rounds crowned champions.
Ilaoa & To’omata made a strong statement as they thrashed PanSa 6-1 in their opening match of the season. Former FC SKBC striker Gun Chul Kang has switched allegiences this season but hasn’t lost any of his scoring talent. He whacked five goals in to give the 2014 Division 2 champions an opening victory in the top flight.
Lion Heart also started well with their 5-2 victory over Vaiala Tongan earning them three points, with two second half penalties contributing to their tally.
Utulei Youth and 2015 OFC Champions League Preliminary participants FC SKBC played to a 2-2 draw in the Division 1 Cup Challenge match – with the latter giving away a 2-0 lead.
Jerry Kena and Ene Ah Sam were the authors of two first half goals to give their side the lead at the break. American Samoa national team member Ne’emia Kaleopa was on-form to help Utulei Youth pull back two goals to get them back in line. However a number of missed opportunities on attack denied them the win.
In Division 2 Pago Youth made a strong return to competition, after the club took a year long hiatus, smashing 19 unanswered goals past Vaitogi United. The former National League champions didn’t have the numbers to field a team in 2014 but have come back with a bang and put themselves on strong ground to earn a return to Division 1 next season.
In the women’s league, seven teams are competing in the 7-A-Side competition, with the Cup Challenge matches being incorporated into the league.
Cup holders and defending league champions Utulei Youth and President’s Cup defending champions PanSa are joined by Tafuna Jets, Green Bay, Lion Heart and Vaiala Tongan with two matches taking place every other Saturday.
