For the next three days, 24 of the world’s elite EA SPORTS™ FIFA 12 gamers will compete for the interactive world title in the beautiful city of Dubai.
The excitement was palpable in the lobby of the impressive Madinat Jumeirah hotel yesterday as the Grand Finalists arrived one after the next. Many were meeting each other for the first time, while others have become good friends during previous editions of the FIFA Interactive World Cup. Some players have traveled from Central and South America, others from Europe, Asia and Oceania.
OFC is being represented by New Zealand’s Reece Lambert, who won the OFC Final at Auckland’s Sylvia Park last month.
All 24 players are here, however, with a single purpose in mind: to win the FIWC12 title and with it, USD 20,000 in prize money and a trip to the next FIFA Ballon d’Or Gala.
Champion of 2010 Nenad Stojkovic, who is attending the FIWC12 Grand Final as a guest commentator, spoke of the popularity of the tournament shortly after arriving.
“I think every year the FIWC is just getting bigger and bigger,” he said.
“I think the destination was a huge draw for a lot of gamers who definitely wanted to qualify so they could get to visit Dubai. I think it’s different, it’s not your typical European or American destination like a Los Angeles or Barcelona. Los Angeles was amazing but with Dubai the experience will be out of the ordinary.”
