The young striker missed out on helping the Fiji U-20 side qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2014, but after serving his suspension has made quite the comeback in 2015.
He scored Fiji’s first goal at a FIFA World Cup tournament when he netted in his side’s opening match at New Zealand 2015, and went on to prove a crucial member of the U-23 squad which qualified for the Olympic Games Men’s Football Tournament in Papua New Guinea last month.
Back in Fiji, the 19-year-old further added to his magical year when he opened the scoring for Rewa in the final of the Battle of the Giants against Ba.
“I’m happy to score in front of my home fans, to score for Rewa,” Verevou says, “I’m proud of this victory.”
Verevou also laid claim to the Golden Boot with his five goals and secured a Man of the Match title to top it off.
“This victory is the start of many things for me. I want to score more goals for Rewa and the national team, especially at the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.
“My aim now is to play for the Fiji U-23 team at the Olympics and I will maintain my level of performance to get in the team and score more goals for Fiji.”
Verevou was replaced in the second half by older brother Epeli Saukuru who came on to secure the win with a 90 minute strike, helping to make the win a real family occasion.
“I knew I would score,” the 27-year-old claims.
“It’s a proud moment for me and Verevou.”
