FRANCE – Martinique were too good for determined New Caledonia at the 2008 Coupe de L’Outre-Mer edging the South Pacific Games gold medallists 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out to claim a place in the final against either La Reunion or French-Guiana. The result gave Martinique a 100% record from its three group matches. The tournament format does not allow for matches to end in a draw and a penalty shoot-out is used to determine the winner.

French-Polynesia’s third consecutive 1-0 defeat consigns it to seventh and last place in the seven team tournament, a far cry from the territories previous best performances that included two cup wins and five runners-up places. Guadeloupe was made to work hard for its victory but was rewarded on 74 minutes when Ludovic Gotin broke the stalemate.

French-Guiana and La Reunion meet in Group 2 action tonight to determine which of those teams will face Martinique in the final.

New Caledonia plays Mayotte in the match for 5th place on October 3 at Stade Marville.
