Koupa team 3 are the new men’s champion while PMSA women claim their third successful title.
It all went down to the wire in both divisions, but the fitter and more experienced teams walked out winners.
The all-Rigo challenge produced a high standard of football when they qualified for the finals after disposing of highly fancied PMSA and NCD PSSA men.
This showed that soccer in the Rigo district is developing and growing fast with the active competitions in the village.
Koupa team 3 defeated Koupa team two 2-1 in the grand final at Bisini Soccer Ground after four days of competition.
Team 3 was the first to score through Karo Ila 16 minutes into the first half and they managed to prevent Team 2 from scoring throughout the rest of the first half.
Team 2 bounced back in the second half equalizing the score at 1-1 through Eki Vali in the 76th minute of the game.
The rest of the second half was tense as pressure continued to build with a lot of missed opportunities from both teams.
The supporters cheered their favourite team on with more pressure put on the goal keepers who managed to stop a few difficult goal attempts.
With two minute remaining Walo Lini blasted the match-winner leaving Koupa team 2 goal-keeper Raisol Gele with no chance.
In the women’s final, Port Moresby Soccer Association finished winners, beating NCD Public Servants Association 1-0 from a corner kick by PMSA captain Deslyn Siniu.
PMSA had the experience but were pushed to their limits by youngsters led by Marie Kaipu.
The two Koupa men’s team with PMSA women will now represent the Southern Region in the second leg of the Besta FA Cup in Lae.
