The team’s departure from Honiara on Saturday was delayed because of technical issues, causing their arrival to the Gold Coast, Australia to be too late to register for the U-16 division they were scheduled to compete in.
Rather than go home without competing, the side decided to register for the Youth category demonstrating the depth of the Solomon Islands futsal talent after going on to dominate the field against some older opponents.
The side won their opener 5-1 against QFA before going on to thrash the South Brisbane, 6-1.
After earning their ticket to the final, the Solomon side learnt their opponent would be the South Brisbane side they had beaten a day earlier.
The local side were out for revenge, but the visitors managed to maintain their hold on the game to be crowned champions following a 6-2 victory.
Team manager Thomas Kalok says the late arrival in Australia had very little impact on the team, with their confidence only growing following their first win.
“The first 5-1 win against QFA was a boost for the boys since we were playing in a category much higher than our scheduled one,” Kaloka says.
“The winning continued right through until the final.”
