A goal by Man of the Match John Irving in the 53rd minute was enough to send the side through into the last four and guaranteed at least another two matches, one a possible third place play-off or, the final, against european glamour side Real Madrid.
Renowned for being coy, coach Ramon Tribulietx let himself enjoy this one.
“This is definitely the best moment of my career,” he says.
“This is the semi-final of the Club World Cup for our semi-professional, amateur side. We haven’t conceded a goal and I think we’ve prevented two sides from having any decent chances on goal.”
Going into the match Tribulietx knew it was going to be difficult, but the players rose to the challenge
“I think we controlled the game for 90 minutes, they had a couple of breaks in there they could have scored but overall I think we controlled the game defensively and when we had the ball.
“We had to defend for periods and I think we did great, we never really parked the bus. We pressed them the way we wanted to press and we created chances.
“I’m proud of the players. I think they did incredibly well and I think the win was deserved bacause we did play 120 minutes, and today against the champions of Africa, they were incredible. Our players are unbelievable.”
With only a short time to bask in this achievement, Tribulietx is already thinking about the next stage – Argentinan club San Lorenzo.
“It’s unbelievable. We’re coming up against a very important team in Argentina, one of the biggest nations in football.
“It’s going to be massive, very, very, difficult – I haven’t got more adjectives to add to that. It’s going to be a difficult task for us but I think we’re happy with where we’re at for that.”
