In May the Fiji U-20 team qualified undefeated for the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand, beating out hopefuls from Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, Vanuatu and American Samoa on their way.
In becoming the first Fijian side to qualify for a FIFA World Cup event, they’ve earned fans from all over and many of them were present to witness the continuing celebrations.
Fiji FA President Rajesh Patel says the grand celebration, featuring a number of local artists, was fitting of the occasion.
“It is a grand occacsion and that is why we have celebrated in a very big way,” Patel says.
“The common dream of seeing Fiji playing at a FIFA World Cup event has been achieved by this young side and this is a proud moment for the country and football family which will be remembered by all for a very long time.”
While recognition from their friends and family has been reward enough for the youngsters, they were also fortunate to share in the spoils offered by the national association.
“Fiji FA has given FIJ$65,000 to the players and management as a reward for their hard work,” Patel explains.
“Of course, at the same time, each player has also been handed a training programme to follow and we want to get started as soon as possible because the World Cup is just a year away.”
Ravinesh Kumar, the coach who led the side through the qualifying stages, says the FIFA U-20 World Cup is now firmly in their focus.
“We want to prepare well for the World Cup and we want to go there and give our best,” Kumar says.
“It will be an uphill battle for Fiji but the coming months will enable us to step up and work harder.”
