Also taking part are American Samoa, Cook Islands and Tonga with the victorious side qualifying for the OFC U-17 Championship, to be held in Vanuatu in April.
Samoa U-17 assistant coach Matautia Phineas Young says they started trialling players in last June before whittling the numbers down from 25 to a final squad of 20 in November.
“The final squad has been training together for one month. We started camp last week and we are training every day, following a specific programme,” Young says.
“We have a mix of training, friendly games, recovery and team bonding sessions. We are preparing the team organisation and tactics for the upcoming tournament.”
The side is mostly made up of 16-year-olds but there are also some younger players set to feature in the tournament.
“We have a 14-year-old boy, Samuelu Malo, who has been selected to join the group because of his technical quality,” Young says.
With their preparations underway and going well, Young believes the side has a good chance of success next week against what he expects to be some tough competition.
“Maybe we are the underdog, but we believe in our group and the boys are confident. We will be ready to give everything.
“Of course the competition will be difficult – everyone wants to qualify for the second round.”
The OFC U-17 Championship Preliminary is being held at J.S. Blatter Field in Apia, Samoa from January 22-26.
