The tournament took place at the Vision City Mega Mall and brought together the region’s best exponents of FIFA 12, the latest version of the highly-popular Sony PlayStation® game.
The competition was fierce and many close matches were fought out but only one player could progress through to the Oceania qualifiers for the world final and that honour fell to Julian Kasu.
Playing as Barcelona, Kasu faced a Mancester City outfit controlled by Stephan Pouru in the final and earned the right to take on Oceania’s best with a narrow victory.
He becomes the second player in the Pacific to book his spot in the Oceania qualifiers after Kevin Duong became the first in December by taking out the opening qualifying event in Tahiti.
A total of 32 participants battled it out for the Papua New Guinea title and the event drew a large crowd of excitable spectators at the impressive Vision City complex.
Kasu and Duong will be joined by six other expert FIFA 12 players at the OFC final, scheduled to take place in April in Auckland, New Zealand.
The winner will then go on to represent Oceania at the world grand final in May, when reigning FIWC champion Francisco Cruz will try to defend his title against the best 23 players on the planet.
Presenting partners EA SPORTS™ and Sony PlayStation® are behind the running of the FIWC, now onto its eighth edition, and this year’s event is expected to be the biggest yet.
Further qualifying events will take place across the Pacific region over the coming months and the schedule is as follows (please note these dates are subject to change):
New Caledonia: February 4-5
Solomon Islands: February 25-26
New Zealand: March 9-11
