NEW training methods have taken its toll on the Fiji women’s side preparing for the South Pacific Games.

The Fijian women who have been in camp in Ba for the last few months have been going through tough training sessions under the guidance of coach Farouk Janeman.

The tough sessions coupled with the hot weather, the training base has become a home for the walking wounded as the coaching staff are keeping their fingers crossed recovery will be swift and before
the start of the SPG next week.

Janeman, a former Fiji and Ba rep said the main reason behind the players getting worn out in preparation phase has been the lack of game time.

“All throughout the year there is not much women’s football played and players just play a couple of matches,” Janeman said.

“This has changed in the national camp where the players have been put through a lot of phases and have been training daily and playing warm up matches.

“This has affected the players and this can be seen with about eight players out injured and a few being serious.”

He said due to the large injuries being suffered by the women, the training has been varied daily to try and avoid any major hic cups before the start of the SPG.

Now the cream of women’s football in Fiji are having sessions which are tough one day and relaxed for the next few days.

“We have to do this so that there are no major injuries,” he said.

However regardless of all the injuries, the players have impressed the coaching staff with their dedication and discipline.

This is a far cry from a couple of years back when the women’s team was alleged to have broken camp rules.

Janeman quipped the players were eager and giving it their best to take the Fijian side to new heights.

“The players are well disciplined and have a good attitude and they are trying to give their best,” Janeman said.

“They are giving how much they know and always want to learn and sacrifice but they have the limits and so far they have done well.”

While the 20 names have already been submitted for the SPG, the coach will only reveal the final team to the players and media next week.
