The amateur players are building up their fitness, strength, tactics and techniques as they approach their first Confederations Cup campaign.
“We have 40 days remaining to prepare ourselves before our first encounter against Nigeria. We will focus on our fitness and athleticism during this period,” says coach Eddy Etaeta.
“The objective is to focus on three points: strength, speed and explosive power. We are also going to work a lot on offensive and defensive situations, and most importantly on stopping goals.”
Etaeta says Dragon’s elimination from the OFC Champions League is unfortunate but now allows the national players who were involved to focus on their preparations for the Festival of Champions.
“We have welcomed back the group who participated in the Champions League. The players of AS Dragon are coming away from six matches of a high level and an elimination which will leave a lot of regrets,” he says.
“So that they are of a physical level, but also mental, we will need to take that into account. I think that after one week where they have maybe kept their heads in the Champions League and with Dragon, this week they will be getting right into the preparations for the Confederations Cup.
“In the heat and with a heavy workload it is going to be difficult for them. But we are already seeing the results, and I have to underline the work done by Kader Touati, the team’s fitness trainer.”
