The 20-year-old recently returned to Australia from Turkey where he featured in all three of New Zealand’s group matches against Uzbekistan, Croatia and Uruguay, who qualified for the final after downing Iraq 7-6 on penalties.
Roux, who made his debut in the A-League last season with the Perth Glory, won’t count as a foreign signing because he holds Australian citizenship.
“I got a big confidence boost when I found out a big club like the Mariners and a coach like Graham Arnold wanted me,” Roux said.
“I am obviously very excited to be joining the Champions. I’m aiming to establish myself as an A-League player during my time at the club.”
Mariners coach Graham Arnold believes the signing of Roux, as well as 16-year-old Tommy Slater from Sydney FC, is in line with the club’s philosophy of developing elite young talent for the big stage.
“It’s about getting some good young players in and giving the opportunity to young players,” Arnold says.
“I watched him [Roux] play against the Australia U-20 side down in Wollongong and he was excellent.”
Roux will join fellow New Zealand international Michael McGlinchey at the Mariners with the All Whites midfielder on contract with the club until the end of the 2014/15 season.
