PNGFA technical director Taku Niebo is leading the charge as the department looks to incorporate more coaches who have trained through the courses offered by FIFA and OFC.
The goal is to have them assist with the various activities PNGFA has planned for the next 18 months in the build-up to the 2015 Pacific Games.
“There are a number of FIFA courses that have been planned this year with a Community Course focusing on women’s football in April followed by Goalkeeping in May, Grassroots in June and C Licence Coaching Course in September,” Niebo says.
“Basically these courses help enhance the game and help us gain support from corporate and Government bodies to come on board and assist in developing football in the country.”
In support of the growing local coaching base, PNGFA will also have local instructors conducting courses in the Southern, New Guinea Islands, Highlands and Momase regions.
“It was a challenging year for us in 2013 as we attempted to provide adequate support to each of our Member Associations, but now the department mandate is to go out and assist coaches, referees and players to develop and improve the standard of football in their respective MAs,” Niebo says.
He says PNGFA has improved over the past few years with assistance from OFC and programmes like Just Play which have covered most of the provinces and helped identify talented players who are motivated to continue their football journey.
“Now the technical department wants to see coaches who have completed courses with the PNGFA being given roles coaching teams in their respective associations.”
