The 29-year-old, who signed with the club in January, made several first team appearances early in the season before being forced out for seven weeks with an injury, and since returning he has been fighting some tough competition in the hopes of being included in the starting line-up.
His stiffest competition comes in the form of rookie Tommy Myers, who replaced the injured DeLaGarza against the Colorado Rapids on Sunday, while David Junior Lopes is also vying for a starting position.
Since returning from his sports hernia injury, Boyens has made several appearances with the reserves team and started the past two CONCACAF Champions League matches against Puerto Rico Islanders, where he was partnered with Myers in defence.
Thanks to those games, if he does get the nod Boyens will be more than ready to step up.
“I feel comfortable out there,” he says.
“Myself and Tommy and David, the three of us have played lots of games this season, either with the first team, the reserves or in the champions league. That’s why we play those games. If it does happen, we can step in.”
While he has no intention of slowing down in his professional career, Boyens has been looking to the future by taking on the role of assistant coach of the LA Galaxy U-15 side alongside head coach Alex Yi.
Boyens has run several coaching camps in his native New Zealand and says coaching is something he has always been interested in.
“I’ve always enjoyed coaching and I’ve done it for a long time, ever since I was 16, and it’s something that I really enjoy,” he says.
“Whether I pursue it or not is up in the air, but it’s definitely good to get some experience especially with some quality young kids.”
It was Boyens who approached the Galaxy for the chance to coach, indicating it was something he was keen to do.
“I went along a few times just to check it out and they needed someone to take that role and it just worked out that I could.
“I have the opportunity to work alongside Alex who is a good man and I get there as many days a week as I can with our schedule. I’m really enjoying it.”
