With women’s football going from strength to strength around the world the focus in New Caledonia is turning towards creating opportunities for female players, coaches, referees and administrators to be active in the world of football.
From June 26-28 the coaches were led through theory and practical sessions focused on the coaching of players aged six to 12, equipping participants with the tools to be able to confidently design and deliver a coaching session for young players of football and futsal, as well as organise a festival.
The course follows on from the progress made during the FIFA Women’s Football Coaching Course held in November 2012 with OFC women’s football development officer Nicola Demaine, who was once again present for this event.
Demaine was joined by OFC head of coach education Didier Chambaron, who is based in New Caledonia, and women’s development officer for the Northern Province Bena Ramesh.
The course was facilitated by FCF technical department staff, including technical director Serge Martinengo de Novack who says women’s football is a priority for the federation in the coming seasons.
“The work done by OFC in the past two years is remarkable and FIFA’s intention is to have women’s football as one of the main focuses for the future of world football,” Martinengo de Novack says.
Ahead of the course the facilitators met to discuss the national plan for development as well as the action plans of each of the different regions in order to best cater to the needs of the participants.
“It was important to summarise what has actually been done and what needs to be done in the future to aid the progress of women’s football throughout the whole country, by studying the different perspectives of development.
“The objective is obviously to see the different perspectives for development of the Caledonian players aged six to 18 years old,” he says.
The course concluded with a one-day festival in Poindimié which saw 67 girls participating, ranging in age from seven to senior.
The players took part in four workshops, each led by the newly trained coaches before the festival was concluded with three matches, also run by the new coaches.
Demaine says the participants showed there is a strong base for developing the women’s game in New Caledonia after seeing them successfully run a festival.
“They looked confident when dealing with players and showed some real potential which looks promising for the future,” Demaine says.
The Women’s Football Coaching Course was organised by FCF in conjunction with the Comite Provincial Nord de Football and with the support of OFC.
