The Bilikiki are the country’s beach soccer team while the Kurukuru are the national futsal side, meaning there was plenty of talent in the opposition’s ranks to test the Solympics squad.
But the youngsters performed well at Lawson Tama Stadium in their first friendly match since being brought together in February and dominated proceedings.
Luke Eroi’s charges enjoyed the lion’s share of possession but making that dominance count on the scoreboard proved a different matter and they lead by a solitary strike going into the break.
That goal was provided by James Egeta, who volleyed home from just inside the box on 17 minutes, but further chances that fell to Johan Doiwale and Micah Lea’alafa could not be converted.
The second half brought more opportunities the Solympics’ way though and several were taken to leave little doubt as to who was in command.
Lea’alafa atoned for his earlier miss by hammering home the second from a Moffat Kilifa cross and Kilifa later got one for himself, embarking on a brilliant solo run before beating goalkeeper Paul Huia to take the score to 3-0.
With just a few seconds left on the clock, midfielder Himson Teleda turned in the fourth goal in an act that proved to be the last of the contest.
Solympics team manager Gideon Omokirio was happy with the win and says it was important to get into the habit of winning before leaving for Taupo, where the Oceania qualifiers for the Olympic Games will be held from March 16 to 24.
“To win in a competition we have to know how to win during training and today we have achieved an important result,” he said.
“However, more important for the management team are the areas that we indentified as needing more attention before the team is ready and it is good that we had this opportunity to analyse our performance.”
The Solympics coaching staff hope to squeeze in another friendly encounter against local club Kossa before departing for New Zealand.
Solomon Islands will open their Olympic qualifying campaign against Fiji on Friday at Owen Delany Park from 12pm local time.
As for all matches, tickets can be purchased from the gate and are priced at $10 for adults and $5 for teenagers/over-65s, while ages 12 and under can enter for free.
