Fiji FA chief executive officer Bob Kumar confirmed the appointment this month and says Sharma, who already serves the association as a vice-president, will act in the role until the return of either Dr. Sahu Khan or Dr. Hari Kewal.
“In the abscence of president Dr. Sahu Khan and vice-president Dr. Hari Kewal who are both away overseas, Anil Sharma has been given the role of acting Fiji FA president until further notice,” Kumar says.
Sharma takes on the role at a busy time for Fiji football with the Vodafone Fiji FACT tournament about to begin and the Pacific Games, set to take place in New Caledonia during August and September, on the horizon.
“It is important someone takes charge, particularly with the Vodafone Fiji FACT and the planning of the international matches that are coming up in late June to early August,” Kumar says.
Sharma is honoured to have been given the responsibility and is keen to continue making strides on the tasks and objectives mapped out by Fiji FA for 2011.
“It is a proud moment for me,” he says.
“I would like to thank Fiji FA for having faith and confidence in me. In the abscence of Dr. Sahu Khan, I will be carrying on with his legacy and plans for the year.”
Sharma is also president of the Navua Football Association and was recently appointed Fiji FA’s new national team director. His immediate task in the role is to spearhead the national men’s and women’s teams campaigns at the Pacific Games in Noumea.
The Vodafone Fiji FACT tournament runs from June 9 to 13 at Churchill Park in Lautoka.
