SUVA – Fiji soccer coach Carlos Buzzetti is hoping to secure a match against the touring Brigham Young University to test his under-20 squad as it prepares for the Oceania playoffs.

The BYU team arrives in the country this week and is scheduled to play Nadi, Ba and Suva.

With the opportunity of facing an overseas opposition early in the preparation period, Buzzetti has proposed for the visitors play a fourth match against the U20 training squad. Buzzetti was in Nadi last week making ground arrangements for the BYU team.

The Uruguayan said it would be ideal to test his players against a quality opposition to expose weak areas.

"The U20 training camp started in Ba last Monday," Buzzetti said.

"We named 60 players in the training squad, only 44 have arrived. There are some key players missing. They are tied up with studies at school while others attend tertiary institution. We hope to get them into camp in the next few days."

Suva’s Sedrick Dutt, Navua’s Wasim Ali and Nadroga’s Archie Watkins Junior are district reps attending the camp.

Buzzetti said the squad will be trimmed to 30 on Sunday. The reduced team will camp in Ba for another week.

"At the moment we are concentrating on skill work," Buzzetti said.

"The boys are going through plenty of football. They train three times a day, once at 6am then before lunch and the final session starting at 4pm."

The Oceania U20 playoffs will be held in Tahiti later this year and will serve as qualifiers for the FIFA U’20 World Cup in Egypt in July 2009.

"There is a lot of experience in the team," Buzzetti said.

"Most players have come through from the U17 grade. Some players have played district level football. We had identified the best players for the Olympic playoff earlier this year.

"In the lead up to the tournament we lost 24 key players. Those sorts of things happen which we will have to keep in mind."

Fiji failed to qualify for the FIFA U20 World Cup after going down to New Zealand 2-1 in the final OFC qualifier in January.

Labasa’s Roy Krishna was the star of the tournament picking up the golden boot award.
