The Moses Toata-coached side earned the S-League title after finishing top of the table in April and continued their dominance with a 2-0 victory over fierce rivals Western United in the final of the championship series on Sunday.
Goals from evasive striker Karol Kakate and substitute Gagame Feni were enough to complete the double and see captain Judd Molea lift another trophy on behalf of his charges.
They have had to wait to add to their earlier success as the championship series – originally scheduled to take place shortly after the league campaign – was postponed due to Honiara’s hosting of the OFC Nations Cup at Lawson Tama Stadium in June.
When it finally arrived, the final was one of most highly-anticipated matches since the S-League was introduced as both sides are packed full of talent.
Western fielded plenty of attacking ability in the likes of Joe Luwi, Jack Wetney, John Aniti, Lenson Bisili and Coleman Makau but Warriors were boosted by the return of skipper and playmaker Molea and put pressure on the United defence from the first whistle.
It wasn’t until the 40th minute that the dominance paid off though, Molea feeding former Amicale striker Joachim Waroi, who cleverly touched the ball on for an onrushing Kakate to race clear and blast Warriors into the lead.
The skilful Feni, who turns 20 next week, came on at half-time for Warriors and spurned a couple of good opportunities to score before making his introduction count with a strike mid-way through the half.
Futsal international Micah Lea’alafa picked up possession in his own half and presented it to Jeffery Bule, who sent a well-timed through ball into the path of Feni for the teen to beat goalkeeper Felix Ray Jnr and hand his team the championship crown.
“It is a dream come true to help win the championship, especially after such a hard-fought grand final against a tough team like United,” said Feni, who recently returned to his native Solomons after a stint in New Zealand with Waitakere United.
Real Makira also had something to celebrate after clinching third place with a 6-0 win over former OFC Champions League representatives Kossa, a Nicholas Muri brace providing the inspiration for the hefty victory.
Solomon Warriors will replace Koloale as the country’s representative in the Champions League for the 2013 season.
