The final wrapped up the competition following weeks of women’s football action involving more than 700 players which concluded with four teams battling it out in a round-robin group as they looked to secure their spot in Saturday’s final.
AD Patel College principal Vinod Sharan said this is the first girl’s football team the school has ever fielded and it was great to see them do so well.
“The talent that we have is great. It is a historic win. We would like to dedicate it to all the supporters of AD Patel, especially Vinod Patel. He was one man behind the scenes who was instrumental in supporting us all the way,” Sharan said.
The side, while young, also included members of the development squad from local club Ba who helped the side become an unbeatable force in the competition.
“The talent that we have in the team is great. The girls displayed good football skills and technique and we will be looking at getting our other age group teams in the competitions to develop them.”
One of the stand-out players for AD Patel is 15-year-old Louisa Tamanitokula who scored a hat-trick in the final, which also saw Sonali Rao earn a brace and Louisa Naba put one away.
Saturday’s three goals lifted Tamanitokula’s tally of goals in the competition to 16.
The Fiji FA is incredibly pleased with the competition especially in terms of the number of girls who have been involved from the beginning as well as the talent that has been on display throughout the competition.
The technical department is confident they will identify a strong group of players from the competition who could go on to participate in the OFC U-17 Championship in 2014.
