“It’s been two years since our last futsal competition and we are glad to have it once again in our sport calendar year,” explained Football Federation American Samoa CEO Tavita Taumua.
Both the Black Roses’ men’s and women’s teams won the FFAS 2010 league.
“In 2010 we had futsal for both men and women. This time around our technical department has decided to concentrate only on the men’s competition. This is so the event does not drag on too long because we can hire only one gymnasium to hold our games at,” Taumua said.
“Another factor, and a major one at that, is that we may decide to join the OFC Futsal Championship later this year and that competition is for men only.”
Another change added is the inclusion of a few sponsors for the league.
“We are very grateful to Aaron Forsgren and the Forsgren Laufou Shopping Centre, Blue Sky chairman and CEO Adolfo Montenegro, Kristopher’s Store in Leone and Godinet Rentals for their donations towards our futsal competition,” FFAS President Iuli Alex Godinet said.
Club presidents and coaches met recently with the FFAS technical department to review the competition’s rules, regulations and format.
Fourteen clubs are participating with three of them fielding two teams each, giving the league a total of 17 teams. All the teams have been divided into two groups, Pool A and Pool B, with nine in the former and eight in the latter. The top two teams from each pool will advance to the playoffs to determine the 2013 champions.
Pool A consists of Utulei Youth, Tafuna Jets B, Vaitogi United, Taputimu Youth, PanSa, Vaiala Tongan, Green Bay and Lion Heart B.
In Pool B are Minks Cool Air FC SKBC, Atu’u Broncos, Ilaoa & To’omata, Lion Heart A, Black Roses, Pago Youth B, Kiwi Soccers and Tafuna Jets A.
