Troyes is one of three sides who, after struggling to make their mark in Ligue 1, will be relegated to Ligue 2 for the upcoming 2013/14 season.
While no doubt disappointed at his club’s descent from the top league, there are some positives for the Caledonian whose professional career has been handed a lifeline in the form of a one year contract extension.
And with a number of the side’s current strike-force leaving the club for the coming season, including Mohamed Yattara and Jean-Christophe Bahebeck who are heading for Lyon and Paris-Saint-Germain respectively, life in division two could prove the chance Gope-Fenepej needs to make his mark on French football.
Following his debut in Ligue 1 in February against Lille, Gope-Fenepej said he thought he had made a lot of progress since his arrival in France.
“Compared with what I was doing at home, I have learnt a lot of things that I didn’t know how to do before. I also feel like everyone is paying me attention and looking to help me,” he said.
“I am hugely motivated to succeed. Even if I have to go through a mouse-hole, I will go through that and clear any other obstacles. There is no room for me to make any errors. I have to work hard so I don’t let down New Caledonia and my family.”
The French Ligue 2 season for 2013/14 is due to get underway on Friday, 2 August 2013 with the final day of matches scheduled for Friday, 16 May 2014. Gope-Fenepej has signed a contract extension until the 30 June 2014.
