New Zealand international striker Chris Wood has not only made the list – but cracked the top ten to boot.
Magazine staff spoke to match-going fans from every corner of the football league in England, asking them to name the best players in their own team’s division but outside of their own club.
The votes were to be based on performances this season, with a nod to overall class and once the votes came in staff used a sliding points scale for each entry based on a player’s position and division.
All White striker Wood bounced from club to club on loan from Premier League side West Bromwich Albion before proving his form while on loan to Championship side Millwall earlier this season ahead of a permanent switch to promotion chasing Leicester City was finalised during the January transfer window.
The magazine states that Wood appears to have finally settled and is now set to do what he does best – score goals.
Leicester City teammate Matty James speaks very highly of the young Kiwi and his integration into the team.
“Although young, he is quite a big lad – strong and mobile,” James says. “That gives us that different element.”
Not quite making the list but named as one of the “Best of the Rest”, is Wood’s All Whites teammate defender Tommy Smith.
The 23-year-old initially struggled to hold down a first team place at Ipswich Town but since Mick McCarthy took over as manager he has become a regular starter, reaching 100 appearances for the club.
Inseparable at the head of the top-50 list were 20-year-old Crystal Palace winger Wilifried Zaha and 21-year-old Blackpool winger Tom Ince.
