AUCKLAND – New Zealanders Peter O’Leary and Brent Best have been selected to officiate at December’s FIFA Club World Cup in Japan.

Hamilton referee O’Leary, 35, and Dunedin assistant referee Best, 39, will join fellow A-League officials Mark Shield, Nathan Gibson and Ben Wilson in Japan where O-League champions Waitakere United face a December 7 playoff against undetermined Japanese opposition for a place in the main draw.

The appointments mark the first time that New Zealand or Australian match officials have been selected to participate at the FIFA Club World Cup, the world’s most prestigious club tournament.
