NOUMEA – AS Magenta’s aspirations of claiming a rare Super Ligue Nestle and Coupe de Nouvelle Caledonie double were never in danger after Pierre Wajoka’s men cruised into the
quarter finals of the cup after a 9-0 drubbing of JS Mare last night.
After finishing its Super Ligue Nestle season with a shock 1-0 defeat to AS Temala and enthralling 3-3 draw with title contenders JS Bac, there was some evidence to suggest AS
Magenta might find the Sud League leaders JS Mare a difficult proposition in the uncertain atmosphere of a cup fixture.
That resistance never materialised as Michel Hmae and Pierre Wajoka ran riot against their plucky opponents in a fixture that rapidly became a sporting mis-match as the Magenta
side loaded with New Caledonia internationals picked apart a JS Mare team struggling to bridge the chasm in quality between Super Ligue football and the weekly fare served up in New Caledonia’s
southern region football competition.
AS Magenta has won the Coupe de Nouvelle Caledonie on six consecutive occasions between 2000 and 2005.
With AS Magenta’s quarter-final place safely secured, seven berths still remain to be filled over the next three days. Two Super Ligue Nestle clubs will face off against regional
league opposition with AS Mont Dore facing Etoile de Banoutr and AS Kirikitr meeting AS Lossi in tonight’s two Coupe de Nouvelle Caledonie fixtures at Stade Nouma Daly.
Stade Pentecost will host FC Gaitcha’s match against Kunie. The Super Ligue Nestle cellar-dwellers will view the Coupe de Nouvelle Caledonie as a chance to forget a season
that began promisingly but nosedived spectacularly in mid-season amid loss of form and an administrative error that led to a docking of points.
AS Temala and ACB Poya meet in the Coupe de Nouvelle Caledonie’s only all-Super Ligue Nestle affair with AS Temala already claiming maximum points from the two clubs league
fixtures. AS Temala defeated ACB Poya 6-1 and 3-1 and start as firm favourites to make it three wins in a row.
AS Thio Sport face Auteuil while in an all non-Super Ligue Nestle affair Mouli Sport take on Hienghene Sport at Stade Nouma Daly.
ES Houailou will be under no illusions as they take on JS Baco at Stade Poindimie.
