The win over the Swiss, who finished runners-up in the 2009 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup, is an impressive start to the Tiki Toa’s preparations for the next World Cup, which they will become the first Pacific Island nation to host in September of next year.
Tahiti forward Raimana Li Fung Kuee says the Switzerland clash was a very difficult challenge for his team who have not played an international game of beach soccer in over a year.
“It was a good preparation match for us. The objective was to get used to the standard and find the level we had last year because we haven’t had an international match for a year,” he says.
“The goal was to find our feet again. In terms of the result, we won and that’s good, but everything moves quickly in beach soccer and the game goes from one end to the other so the score can easily go either way.”
“There are still two matches to go and we will see how we do on Friday and Saturday. We will continue to train because the road to the World Cup is still very long.”
The Tiki Toa have two matches to go against the Swiss in the series, on Friday at 4pm and Saturday at 10am (both local time) in the Jardins de Paofai.
