The 19-year-old All White, on loan from West Bromwich Albion, is quickly becoming a fans’ favourite at St Andrew’s having now scored 10 goals in his last 10 matches, including two in the Blues’ European campaign.
Birmingham trailed after just three minutes but David Murphy equalised in the 26th minute and Wood grabbed all three points deep into stoppage time, stealing in at the near post to finish fellow substitute Marlon King’s cross.
Such a lengthy spell of additional time was required after Birmingham defender Pablo Ibanez was knocked unconscious in worrying fashion and needed more than six minutes of treatment.
It was Wood’s second Europa League goal of the season and goes with the eight he has scored so far in the second-tier English Championship.
The result puts Birmingham level on points with Brugge at the top of Group H with two wins from three games and, following Maribor’s 1-1 draw with Sporting Braga in the other group game, they have a real chance of reaching the knockout stage.
In other midweek action, Winston Reid played a full game for West Ham United on Wednesday in a top-of-the-table clash with Southampton. The Hammers went down 1-0 to the Saints but have held on to second place in the Championship.
Kris Bright scored his first goal for Balzan Youths on Tuesday morning but it wasn’t enough to stop his club sliding to a 3-1 defeat to Floriana in Malta Premier League.
Earlier in the week, Andy Boyens played 90 minutes in Major League Soccer’s Superclasico between LA Galaxy and Chivas USA.
Boyens contributed a goalline clearance for Chivas but the Galaxy clinched the Los Angeles derby 1-0. Dan Keat and Simon Elliott were unused subs in the match.
