The five-day course is being conducted by Chan, who last visited the Pacific nation in 2009, with assistance from OFC women’s development officer Nicola Demaine who says the goal is to increase the knowledge of the 20 participants who all work in the women’s game either coaching or at the regional football associations.
Chan, a widely experienced coach with qualifications gained in her home country, is confident that all those taking part in the course will gain valuable knowledge and experience to help cultivate the game in Vanuatu.
“Women’s football is growing and I hope you take the lessons you will learn here to heart and apply it yourself,” she told the group.
“You could be the next women’s national team coach if you apply yourself.”
Vanuatu Football Federation women’s development officer Rorona Kalsakau says it is an honour to have somebody of Chan’s calibre helping the coaches who will lead women’s football into the future.
“We are very privileged to have someone with experience on the international level as a player and coach,” Kalsakau says.
The course will culminate in a festival on Friday to allow the coaches to apply some of the knowledge and skills they have learnt from Chan over the past few days.
Demaine says from her point-of-view it has been a very positive week.
“You can feel some of the participants’ desire to develop women’s football, to go back to their communities and organise their own festivals like the one that will be held on Friday.”
