The competition has been split into two pools – five teams in each – with the top two sides going through to the semi-finals.
The competition kicked off on 22 June with Round Two completed at the weekend. After two rounds Amicale is leading Pool A with six points while Pool Two has two teams tied at the top, Tereo FC and Centre Ville, with six points apiece.
VFF Women’s Development Officer Rorona Kalsakau says she is excited about this new competition and the opportunities it provides for young girls in Port Vila.
“Women’s football development is our priority. The time had come to focus on the foundation of women’s football and encourage its growth and development at Grassroots and Youth level as VFF believes the future of women’s football starts here,” Kalsakau says.
“We have made remarkable progress in women’s football over the last few years. Last year we began a grassroots competition, we organised our first U-17 event and many girls who had never played football before turned up to play at the Amicale field.
“Girl’s teams have since been established in Port Vila and they train regularly. VFF women’s department is also working closely with other member associations conducting courses for coaches and ensuring they understand the strategy and importance behind the development of women’s football in Vanuatu.”
Kalsakau says women’s football is now starting to be taken seriously throughout the country thanks to the continued support of VFF, OFC and FIFA.
“I am sure that if we continue like this girl’s and women’s football in the country will continue to grow stronger in the future.”
