The All Whites are rank outsiders for the FIFA World Cup but caught the eye recently with a friendly win over Serbia.
“We have seen the New Zealanders play against Serbia,” says Manchester City youngster Weiss, who is the son and namesake of coach Vladimir Weiss.
“We know what we can expect from them. We will obviously try to get all three points.”
Slovakia completed their preparations for the tournament with a comfortable 3-0 friendly win over Costa Rica on June 5.
“When we play we will build on the work we put in against Costa Rica,” says Weiss. “I believe that the New Zealand match will turn out as we all want.”
His father says the side will adopt an attacking approach against Ricki Herbert’s men and is conscious of the need to start with a victory.
“We will try to win by playing offensively and if we do that then we will have created a good starting point. But I also expect the same from our opponent. Any failure by us will complicate the situation and it would mean we would have to try something different in the other two games.”
The team has received a welcome boost with the news that defender Martin Skrtel is expected to be fit for the clash against New Zealand.
The Liverpool player was substituted early on in the Costa Rica game, prompting fears that he would miss the tournament with an ankle problem.
However, scans showed the injury was not as serious as first thought and the 25-year-old has responded well to treatment.
“Based on preliminary conclusions, there is no damage to the tissue in his ankle,” says Ladislav Pavlovic, the squad’s chief physician.
Slovakia face New Zealand on Tuesday before taking on Paraguay and Italy in their remaining Group F games.
