The announcement of the cash injection was made at a press conference held in Port Moresby on Friday.
PNGFA and OFC President David Chung was grateful for the West New Britain provincial government for honouring its commitment.
“FIFA is happy to support infrastructure development in the New Guinea Island region and this facility will be developed for them to host the Papua New Guinea Games in 2016.
“Other sports apart from soccer will benefit from the use of these facilities,” Chung says.
Chung says formal approval for the Kimbe Soccer Academy in Bougainville is expected to be granted by FIFA at its Executive Committee meeting on March 22 in Zurich, Switzerland.
“There will be a ground breaking ceremony in April or May for the academy in Bougainville.
“The Autonomous Region of Bourgainville government has committed counterpart funding of K1.3 million with FIFA to meet the other half to construct this new facility,” Chung says.
West New Britain Governor Sasindran Muthuvel said his government was delighted to meet its commitment toward the development of the K2.4 million Academy.
“I am pleased to present this cheque as our counterpart funding to this new Academy.
“It is particularly pleasing to note that FIFA gave its approval for the construction of this Academy not only to promote soccer but other codes as well using this facility,” Muthuvel says.
