FFS women’s development officer Lynette Faaiuaso says it is an important step in the process to developing the women’s game in Samoa.
“Football Federation Samoa has always placed high importance on developing opportunities for female players to take part in football and is forever grateful for the support from FIFA to make it all happen,” she says.
“One of the main priorities in the Women’s Football Development Plan is the re-introduction of football in colleges or secondary schools and for players to earn the opportunity to be selected for our national U-17 team.”
The league is not being restricted solely to Upolo either, Savai’i schools will also be involved with five teams having registered to take part in the eight team competition.
The four week long competition kicked off on 1 September and the finals will be played at the J.S. Blatter Football Complex on Upolo, with the top two Savai’i teams making the boat ride over.
Nine U-19 men’s teams have registered to participate.
