The opening weekend of play saw eight matches played over two pools with the results showing a very competitive season is in store.
In their Pool B match, Lion Heart A dominated the first half against the youthful Black Roses side, scoring seven goals to one ahead of the break.
The Black Roses came back much stronger in the second period to keep the scoring to two goals apiece – eventually losing the match 9-3.
The match proved very fruitful for Charmany Fa’atupuinati who found the back of the net four times for Lion Heart A, while Ruben Luvu added a brace of his own.
In Pool A action, Ne’emia Kaleopa, Peter Harrington and Toko Siatu’u scored two-a-piece to help Utulei Youth to a 7-1 drubbing of Lion Heart B, whose only goal was scored by Hiva Tu’ulau.
Vaitogi United won their match against Vaiala Tongan 4-1, however the final score belies what was a closely-contested game between two evenly-matched sides.
The pair went into the break with the match 1-0 in United’s favour. The teams were mid-way through the second half before they were able to extend their lead, before a goal for Tongan five minutes later left them just one ahead.
Despite an increase in intensity for Tongan following their goal, United managed to pull away for the win thanks to a brace from Mikey Unasa.
FFAS CEO Tavita Taumua says it was great to see so much interest in the league with spectators being provided with some exciting round one action.
