Honiara Football Association (HFA) president William Lai was elected President of the Solomon Islands Football Federation for the next four year term, replacing former chairman of the Normalisation Committee Barnabas Anga.
Eddie Omokirio, president of Malaita Football Association (MFA), joins the Executive Committee as vice-president with the remainder of the members including Tommy Mana, president of Makira Ulawa Football Association (MUFA), Adrian Gina, vice-president of Western Football Association (WFA) and Angeline Vave.
Vave’s inclusion on the committee is in line with the provisions of the new SIFF Statutes requiring at least one member of the committee to be a woman.
OFC President David Chung congratulated Lai and his fellow executive committee members on their successful election.
“On behalf of the OFC football family I would like to congratulate you on your election as President of the Solomon Islands Football Federation,” Chung shared.
“The number of votes you obtained in being elected is an overwhelming endorsement by the membership to elect you as President of SIFF. I would also like to pass on my congratulations to the newly elected Executive Committee members.”
Chung was also quick to recognise, and congratulate the Normalisation Committee, made up of chairman Anga and members Adrian Wickham, Henry Kapu and Primo Afeau, for their contribution to football in Solomon Islands over the past 18 months.
“Without hesitation each one of you volunteered your time despite your busy work schedules and family commitments to pass on your experience and expertise to reform the administration of SIFF,” Chung says.
“SIFF has elected a new President and Executive Committee but this would not have been possible if the Normalisation Committee had not set the foundation with revised SIFF Statures and Regulations, improved financial management and implementation of relevant domestic and national football programmes.
“On behalf of the FIFA and OFC football family I would like to sincerely thank you all for your contribution to rebuilding the administration and the SIFF stakeholders should be indebted to the work you have undertaken on their behalf.”
Newly elected SIFF President Willie Lai acknowledged the work the Normalisation Committee has done restoring SIFF’s reputation in the eyes of the football community, and called for unity going forward.
“I wish to thank the SIFF normalisation committee for lifting football from despair. You have done an excellent job,” Lai says.
“We now look forward to the work that needs to be continued and to the cooperation of members and partners for football.”
Anga expressed his appreciation at being able to work for the betterment of football and wished the new Executive Committee all the best as they begin their four year term at the helm of Solomon Islands football.
“I wish to thank all the members of SIFF for their contribution to the Congress today and to my committee for their hard work over the last 18 months,” Anga says.
“We wish the new executive committee all the best in leading football for our country.”
The new Executive Committee will serve a four year term, with the next elective congress for SIFF to be held in 2019.
