When Siaraga FC attacking midfielder White Wilkins took to the field against defending champions Amicale FC in their semi-final match up two weeks ago his appearance caused quite a stir amongst the spectators.
Wilkins’ appearance was unique in that he is one of very few disabled athletes to participate in the NSL, having lost his hand three years previous.
Selected in the starting line-up for the semi-final, which Siaraga went on to lose 4-2, Wilkins says he thoroughly enjoyed the chance to forget about his disability and play 80 minutes of good football.
“Today I made history playing in a match like a normal person,” the 29-year-old says.
“I may have lost my hand three years ago but that doesn’t stop me from playing football. At first I was a bit nervous, but after a few weeks on the ground at Chapuis Stadium I felt confident enough to play with my teammates.
“I really enjoyed playing in the TVL National Super League and to play against Amicale FC is always going to be a good experience. I will work hard again with my team to try and qualify for next year’s competition and I just want to wish Tafea FC all the best of luck for the 2014 OFC Champions League.”
