The venue of the 1925, 1927 and 1989 Chatham Cup finals will also host the 19th final of the ASB Women’s Knockout Cup in another bumper day of football in the capital.
The final of each competition sees a first-time finalist take on a multiple winner with Lower Hutt facing four-time winners from Auckland in the ASB Chatham Cup final and three-time ASB Women’s Knockout Cup winners Three Kings United from Auckland facing Palmerston North’s Massey University.
Recent tradition has seen the finals played at North Harbour Stadium but with the venue for 11 of the last 14 Chatham Cup finals due to host provincial rugby that weekend an alternate venue was sought.
“The clash has allowed us to take another important game of football around the country and with the great support Capital Football has shown, I’m sure cup finals day will be a success just like last year’s finals in Palmerston North were,” New Zealand Football chief executive Grant McKavanagh says.
Wellington has a long association with the Chatham Cup final. The first two in 1923 and 1924 were held at Wellington’s Athletic Park while the Basin Reserve has hosted the most finals with 52.
Lower Hutt secured their passage to the Chatham Cup with a 4-0 win over Caversham at Dunedin’s Caledonian Ground while Central thrashed eight-man Miramar Rangers 6-0 at David Farrington Park in Wellington.
Massey upset Claudelands Rovers 4-1 in Hamilton to book their first ever ASB Women’s Knockout Cup final and were joined by Three Kings, who dispatched last year’s runners-up Coastal Spirit from Christchurch 2-0.
Three Kings and Central were drawn as the respective home teams in a ballot yesterday, giving them the right to wear their home kit in case of a colour clash.
Admission for the double header is $10 for adults (children under-15 free) with the ASB Women’s Knockout Cup final kicking off at 11am and the ASB Chatham Cup final at 2.30pm.
