Smith’s towering header found the back of the net in the second half to give Mick McCarthy’s side a grip on the game they never looked like releasing with two own goals from Millwall helping them secure their first win of the new season.
McCarthy was delighted to see his team get points on the board, and also had high praise for the Kiwi’s efforts.
“It was a tough game, a typical Championship match with both teams looking difficult to beat,” McCarthy said.
“The second goal was a terrific header. Tommy is a head it, kick it defender and he has embraced that. He’s been great for us and is a threat in the air. I would have been proud of that goal as a centre-half myself.
“The three goals put a gloss on it. I would have been delighted with any win but to score three and keep a clean sheet, that’s a nice way to win a football match.”
This was Ipswich Town’s second match of the new season, with their next match an encounter with last season’s Premier League bottom-dwellers Queens Park Rangers.
