Heavy rain might have muddied the pitch but it didn’t come close to dampening spirits on the final day of action as the community of Taro and its neighbouring villages coming out in force.
Local government officials were among the fans who turned up to witness proceedings in the final days of the annual event, which brings together a numbeer of different sporting disciplines.
For football four teams took part in the competition, Babatana Ward, Senga, Choiseul Bay and Taro Station.
When it came down to the semi-finals it was Babatana Ward booking a place in the grand final with a narrow win over Choiseul Bay, while Taro Station defeated Senga 3-1 to earn progression.
In the play-off for third place Senga outclassed Choiseul Bay to claim third in a hotly contested match.
The grand final followed with plenty of drama and action seeing the two sides locked at 1-1 at the end of regulation time.
Babatana Ward finally broke through their opponents defence just before the end of the first half of extra time. They held on to earn the title of champions of Choiseul football.
Solomon Islands Football Federation supported the event, providing match balls and competition gear. The football component of the Lauru Games was organised by Lauru Football Association (LFA), a provincial affiliate of SIFF.
Honiara-based referees Jackson Namo and Bernard Mutukera were called on to officiate the competition.
