After leading the side to their first title in 16 years, Swamy says the win over arch-rivals Ba in the final of the recent Fiji FACT tournament is a memory he will hold onto forever.
The PEMAC school teacher says there is no secret to his side’s success – just hard work and dedication.
“It is the players who have won the tournament for the people of Nadi, We had two sessions of training daily adn tehre were strict diet controls on the players, they ate what we gave them and it really showed at the tournament,” Swamy says.
“Then we changed our system of play with formations and the boys listened to my instructions very well. We trained till the last minute with our set pieces, we trained a lot.”
Nadi’s Rusiate Matarerega scored from a brilliant free kick during the side’s semi-final against Suva helping his side qualify for the final. Before taking the free-kick Matarerega and his coach communicated via their fingers in a system unknown to outsiders. Following Swamy’s sideline instructions, Matarerega curled the ball into the back of the net, clipping the goal post on the way.
When asked about their unique communication system, Swamy wouldn’t reveal any secrets to their winning game plan with two more tournaments remaining this year.
With a vast amount of experience behind him having coached Suva, Tavua and the Fiji national U-17 team, Swamy says it is up to the boys of they are to play in the OFC Champions League with Nadi currently leading the National Football League standings with 31 points.
“It is totally on the boys how they play in the remaining national football league matches and what matters the most is if Nadi does want to compete in the Champions League then we need to do well in the remaining matches which we have in the coming days.”
Nadi will host Rewa at Prince Charles Park in Nadi on Sunday, 23 June at 3pm.
