OFC Media spoke with New Caledonian internationals Pierre Wajoka and Benjamin Longue ahead of Saturday’s "The Beautiful Game" fixture with MLS super-club LA Galaxy.

OFC: How does it feel to be in the Oceania team and to play against the LA Galaxy?

Pierre: It is a moment of great pride for us, pride at representing our country and of being recognised.

OFC: Christian Karembeu is playing, he has a lot of mana (respect) in this region, is it exciting, the prospect of seeing Christian and playing in the same team and environment, do you have any comments or thoughts?

Pierre: Christian is an example for all of us, for New Caledonia and for all footballers who aspire to play at the highest level. We are maybe the first to play with him on the pitch and that is a source of great pride, it is an honour that isnt afforded to everyone. He is a big brother and role model.

OFC: How does it feel to be in a diverse group because normally the players from New Caledonia play Vanuatu, Samoa but now i there a brotherhood to be together, it is a unique experience.

Pierre: It is true that usually we are adversaries but to play in the same team is good. It allows to build good relations, to come back home and say “we played with this or that player and they are very good”. The football culture is very different between Fiji, Saloman, Vanuatu and Caledonia. Mixing cultures always does good whether in sport or in human relations.

OFC: New Caledonia has been very successful – winning the South Pacific Games, runners up in Oceania Nations Cup to New Zealand…what is the future for New Caledonian football is it to build on this and go to the next level and what do they need to do to achieve this?

Pierre: It was a success, that’s for sure, but it has been ten years now that Caledonia are at a superior level to the others. Concerning Tahiti, Solomon Islands there are of course players that come back after having played overseas. This year has been a good one because there was the motivation of the World Cup, and that made us rise to another level. After, the most important thing is to continue. We have the tendency of arriving at a high level and then regressing straight away. The most important is to either maintain or rise our level of play, but that demands a lot of work.

OFC: What is Pierre and Benjamin’s thoughts on playing Beckham, you played Central Coast Mariners, LA Galaxy is bigger?

Pierre: They are great players, firstly against the Central Coast it was a higher level. To play against the English star David Beckham makes us very proud. It also allows us to measure ourselves to professional players. It is going to be very hard, even harder than against the Central Coast. We will do our best as Caledonians and we will be proud. To be on the pitch with David Beckham and Edgar Davids, for us amateurs, it is going to be a super experience.

OFC: What do they think the effect will be for the development of the game, for a young kanak (New Caledonian) to see the game on RFO of the Galaxy versus Benjamin, Pierre, Christian. What does this feeling generate?Pierre: To be part of Oceania team is fantastic and of course everyone knows Christian. Regarding us two, we play as amateurs and are in contact with the young players who will suddenly see us on the pitch with David Beckham, Christian Karembeu and Edgar Davids. They will tell themselves “ok, if we work we can be known in the Pacific and maybe if we work even more we can become pro and go to Australia rather then the traditional route of France.”

OFC: Can Oceania All Stars win the game?

Pierre: There is always a way, and it is true that we Caledonians hate to lose. We are very proud, sometimes too proud. Firstly on Saturday we are going to try not to lose heavily, we are going to go all out and after anything is possible.

OFC: Benjamin played for Bastia, what was that experience like? Because it is difficult for people from the Pacific to go to France, Spain or England and to become a professional – for Christian, he set an example but it was also very tough.

Benjamin: It is hard, I was a pro for three years, I was formed at Bastia. I was fourteen years old when I arrived there. I was with the youth team and after that I played twelve matches in League One with the professionals. It is hard every day at training you have to win your starting spot.

OFC: Was it difficult to be away from New Caledonia? Was it lonely?

Benjamin: No, no, I chose to go to Bastia because of the climate. At first, the first year was hard.

OFC: Which players did you play alongside in Ligue Un that maybe people would know?

Benjamin: The last was Christian (Karembeu) when h
e arrived, he finished his career at Bastia. After that I played against Ronaldinho, Juninho. I played Dugarry in my first pro game, against Bordeaux.

OFC: Not bad for a defender from New Caledonia. What was the feeling to be marking Dugarry?

Benjamin: It felt strange, because I watched him when I was young.

OFC: Do Pierre or Benjamin have a message or advice for young New Caledonians and young Oceanians, of the possibilities that lie before them in terms of football?

Pierre: I want to tell them that anything can happen, if we want it we can do it. This happens through a lot of hard work. The advice of experienced players like us is always good, even if we haven’t always been serious, if we had worked harder we wouldn’t be here. You have to go through the ‘right’ path but otherwise anything is possible, and there isn’t only metropole (France), there is also the A-League in Australia or even semi-pro teams in New Zealand.

OFC: Que ressentez vous d’être dans cette équipe d’Océanie qui va jouer contre le LA Galaxy? 

Pierre:  c’est une grande fierté pour nous, c’est une fierté de représenter notre pays et d’être reconnus.

OFC: Christian Karembeu joue, un homme qui a énormément de respect dans la région, avez vous hâte de jouer avec Christian dans la même équipe et le même environnement? Pierre: Christian c’est un exemple pour nous, pour la Nouvelle Calédonie, et pour tous footballer qui peuvent prétendre jouer a ce niveau. Nous sommes peut-être les premiers à jouer avec lui sur un terrain et c’est une grande fierté, ce n’est pas donne a tout le monde. C’est un grand frère et un exemple.OFC: Que ressentez vous d’être dans un groupe aussi diverse, parce que normalement les joueurs de la Nouvelle Calédonie jouent contre  Vanuatu,  Fiji,  les Iles Salomon. Ya t’il maintenant un esprit de fraternite entre ces equipes?Pierre: C’est vrai qu’on n’a toujours tendance a être des adversaires et jouer dans une même équipe c’est bien, cela  permet  d’avoir de bonnes relations, d’arriver chez nous et de dire, " on a joue avec telle ou telle equipe et  ils sont très bien. La culture du football est tres différent entre Fiji, Salomon, Vanuatu et la Calédonie. Mélanger un peu les cultures cela fait du bien, sportivement pour les relations humaines. OFC: La Nouvelle Calédonie a eu beaucoup de succès récemment. Vous avez gagne les South Pacific Games, étiez deuxième en Océanie la Nouvelle Zélande, quel est le futur du football Calédonien? Est-ce d’aller au prochain niveau et comment allez vous accomplir cela?Pierre: C’était un succès ca c’est sur, mais comme on a toujours dit, la Calédonie cela fait dix ans que nous sommes a un niveau superieur  aux autres. Par rapport a Tahiti, Salomon, bien sûr y a des joueurs qui reviennent apres avoir joué a l’extérieur. Cette année a été bonne pour nous parce qu’ il y avait l’enjeu de la coupe du monde, c’est ca qui nous a fait monter d’un cran. Apres le plus important c’ est de continuer.  Chez nous on a tendance a arriver a un haut niveau et puis tout suite régresser. Le plus important c’est soit d’ élever ou de maintenir notre niveau, mais cela  demande du travail. OFC: Quelles sont vos  pensees  en ce qui concerne votre jeu  contre Beckham. Vous avez joué contre le Central Coast mais le LA Galaxy c’est plus grand.Pierre: Ce sont  de grands joueurs, déjà contre le Central Coast c’était un autre niveau. Jouer contre la star Anglaise David Beckham, c’est une grande fierté pour nous. Ca permet aussi de regarder notre niveau a nous par rapport a des professionnels, c’est vrai que cela va être très dure, encore plus dure que contre la Central Coast. On fera de  notre mieux en tant que Calédoniens et on en sera  fières. Etre sur le terrain avec David Beckham et Edgar Davids, pour nous amateurs, ca va être une super expérience.OFC: Quel serait l’effet pour le développement du football et pour les jeunes Calédoniens de voir le match sur RFO de la Galaxy contre Benjamin, Pierre et Christian?Pierre: Faire partie de l’équipe d’Océanie c’est super et puis  tout le monde connait Christian. Pour nous deux chez nous qui jouont en amateurs on côtoit surtout les jeunes qui nous connaissent bien et puis soudain, on est sur le terrain avec David Beckham, Christian Karembeu et Edgar Davids. Ils vont se  dire, "bon si on travaille,  on peut être connus dans le Pacifique et  peut-être si on travaille encore plus, on peut aller en France (c’est la que vont les Caledoniens en general), mais peut-être l’Australie puisque ce sont des professionnels aussi.OFC: Pensez vous que  les Océanie All Stars peuvent gagner ce match?Pierre: Il y  a toujours moyen, c’est vrai que nous en Calédonie on n’aime pas perdre, on a une fierté très haute et parfois on n’arrive pas a ce rabaisser. Premièrement samedi on va essayer de ne pas se prendre une patate, on va ce defoncer et puis après tout est possible.OFC: Benjamin a joue pour Bastia, comment a t’il vécu l’expérience? C’est difficile pour un jouer du Pacifique d’aller en Europe et de devenir professionnel? Benjamin: C’est dur, j’étais trois ans professionnel, j’ai été forme a Bastia, j’avais quatorze ans quand j’y suis allé. J’ai été chez les jeunes puis après j’ai joué en ligue un, douze matches. C’est dur, tout les jours a l’entrainement, il faut gagner sa place.OFC: C’était difficile d’être loin de la Calédonie?Benjamin: Non, non. J’ ai choisi de  partir la bas a cause du climat. Au début, la première année a été dure.OFC: Quels grands joueurs as tu côtoye en ligue un? Benjamin: Le dernier c’était Christian (Karembeu) quand il est arrive, il a fini a Bastia. Apres j’ai joué contre Ronaldinio, Juninhio. Dugarry, c’était mon premier match en pro contre Bordeaux.OFC: Pas mal pour un défenseur de la Nouvelle Calédonie. C’était comment de jouer contre Dugarry?Benjamin: C’a fait bizarre, parce que tu l’as regarde quand tu etais jeune.OFC: Avez vous un message ou des conseils pour des jeunes Calédoniens et Océaniens, des possibilités d’être pro? Pierre: Je veux leur dire que tout est permis donc si on veut on peut. Et cela pa
sse par le sérieux et le travail. Les conseils des grands joueurs comme nous c’a fais toujours du bien, même si nous on n’a pas été sérieux, parce que bon, si on était sérieux on ne serait pas la. Il faut passer par le droit chemin mais sinon tout est permis, il n’ y a pas que la métropole, il y a aussi la A League en Australie ou même le semi-pro en Nouvelle Zelande. OFC: Benjamin, Pierre merci beaucoupPierre: De rien
