The week long FIFA Women’s Coaching Course consists of theory and practical sessions which will help the coaches to better understand how to develop and promote women’s football in the Cook Islands, and is being led by FIFA instructor and OFC women’s development officer Nicola Demaine.
CIFA president Lee Harmon encouraged the partipants to utilise Demaine’s presence and expertise to further develop their coaching skills.
“I am pleased that CIFA can provide such a course to our coaches, not only to polish their coaching skills but also for coaches to equip themselves with the necessary knowledge to encourage the participation of women in the game of football,” Harmon says.
“The association is grateful to OFC and FIFA for responding to our request for this coaching course.”
Demaine agrees that the course is an excellent opportunity for the association to increase women’s participation in football in the Cook Islands, as well as improve performances at an international level.
“Cook Islands have participated at OFC tournaments and are always up there with other Oceania member association sides in regards to performance,” she says.
“From what I have seen Cook Islands have proven to be one of the stong teams within the region in the women’s game and can only grow from here.”
The six-day course is being held at the CIFA headquarters in Matavera and provides an opportunity for the participating coaches to understand where women’s football needs to go, how to be an effective coach and what comes next to develop women’s football in the Cook Islands.
The participants are made up of coaches who are currently involved with women’s football within their clubs and players who have represented the Cook Islands at various age group levels.
