The Reds faced Spirit 08 in a re-scheduled match at PVL Stadium to wrap up their campaign and did so on a winning note with a 2-1 victory. The Super League silverware can now be placed next to the TVL title in the trophy cabinet as the Port Vila-based side’s run of success continues.
Amicale captain Fenedy Masauvakalo hit two goals for the champions while Robert Youlou got one back for Spirit, a strike that proved not enough to put a dent in Amicale’s title celebrations.
After the final whistle, the trophies for the season were dished out to the winning teams in each division by representatives from Telecom Vanuatu Limited (TVL), the main sponsor of football in the country.
Amicale received the Super League trophy for the second year running and their title win also saw them walk away with a cheque for VUV 600,000.
But the major prize is the chance to represent their country again in the next O-League, a competition the Reds will be desperate to go one better in and earn themselves an historic place at the FIFA Club World Cup.
Talisman Masauvakalo also had his impressive efforts throughout the season recognised by being named the league’s best player, as well as taking home the Golden Boot as top scorer.
The humble Masauvakalo was pleased to receive the awards but stressed that winning titles is his number one priority.
He was joined in being singled out by Amicale team mate Nelson Sale, voted the best defender in the competition, and Tafea’s Robert Thomas, who was named the most improved player across the season.
