The FIFA Futsal World Cup qualifier is scheduled for February in Tahiti and national team coach William Bret is keen to take a side that is in the best possible position to contest Oceania’s sole berth in Colombia 2016.
Bret has called on a 21-strong group to take part in the camp which boasts five goalkeepers and a number of players who took part in the 2014 OFC Futsal Championship Invitational including joint-Golden Ball winner Jess Poarairoua.
“We have a group with some experienced players, and also some promising newcomers to look at.
“Some key players are currently injured but between now and the competition we have enough time to find the right mix.”
Under Bret the side has shown great improvement, having gone from the lower rungs of the ladder at the 2013 edition of the OFC Futsal Championship Invitational to the highest point regionally finishing only behind Asian Football Confederation guests Malaysia in 2014.
Having proven themselves as a side on the rise, Bret hopes that by starting their preparations early they will once again challenge for the top spot – though there is certainly much more at stake.
“These qualifiers will be played in the form of a tournament and we know the majority of sides that will be there; New Zealand, Tahiti, Solomon Islands, Fiji, Vanuatu,” he says.
“In principle, everyone should meet.”
The New Caledonia national futsal team will come together on 19-20 September in Magenta and Paita, with training set to focus on fitness, defensive and attacking phases before concluding with a match.
